Pittsburgh Spins Back to the Top: The Return of the Ferris Wheel at Oktoberfest 2024!"
Pittsburgh and the Ferris wheel—a love story that has experienced its fair share of highs and lows—seems to be gearing up for an exciting new chapter.
The romance between Pittsburgh and the Ferris wheel first soared to new heights in 1893 when George Ferris, a Pittsburgh resident, designed the world’s first Ferris wheel for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Ferris conceptualized and brought his iconic creation to life right from his home on Arch Street in Pittsburgh’s North Side, cementing the city’s place in amusement park history.
However, like any relationship, there have been some dips. One notable low point came in 1999 when Kennywood, the beloved local amusement park, removed its Ferris wheel, leaving Pittsburgh without its towering, rotating symbol of joy for years.
But the wheel of fortune is turning once again for Pittsburgh! This October, the city is set to welcome back the thrill and wonder of the Ferris wheel as a 60-foot-tall version is installed on the Roberto Clemente Bridge for Oktoberfest Pittsburgh. From October 3-13, Downtown’s Market Square will be transformed into a lively Bavarian village, complete with festive booths, vibrant banners, and traditional Oktoberfest decorations.
The celebration extends onto the Clemente Bridge, which will host an all-ages Karneval featuring delicious food vendors, engaging activities, carnival-style games, and, of course, the eagerly awaited Ferris wheel. Operating daily from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Ferris wheel will offer breathtaking views of the city skyline and river for just $5 a ride. Each 10-minute journey in the sky will be open to everyone, promising a delightful experience that will spin Pittsburgh back into the Ferris wheel limelight.
Get ready, Pittsburgh—the Ferris wheel is coming back, and it's set to be the highlight of this year’s Oktoberfest festivities!
